Within the four walls of a classroom, learning thrivesthrough the engagement and excitement fostered by teachers and teachingassistants. However, students may sometimes feel confined or disengaged in thissetting and crave the freedom to learn in diverse environments - whether innature, among different people, or immersed in a variety of cultures.

So, what are the benefits of learning outside the classroom?

One clear advantage is enhanced engagement. Interacting with people and experiences beyond the usual classroom environment supports a child’s development and social skills. Allowing students to explore life beyond the classroom builds their confidence and encourages them to learn from different surroundings and cultures.

Another major benefit is the boost in creativity and problem-solving skills. Outdoor learning provides young minds with exciting opportunities to engage with the world in a hands-on way. From solving physical puzzles to exploring the world creatively - such as using mixed media to create new textures - children are empowered to express their individuality, imagination, and humour.

Connecting with nature is another enriching aspect. Experiencing the outdoors, from observing plants and trees to studying insects, provides a pure and engaging way for children to learn. Teachers can harness these natural elements to teach important concepts like pollination, photosynthesis, and ecosystems. Encouraging children to connect with nature promotes a deeper understanding of the environment and should be a greater focus in education - no matter the student's age.

With so many benefits to learning outside, it’s clear how it positively impacts children’s well-being and communication skills. Just an hour in nature can reignite a student’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, offering a welcome break from the traditional classroom environment.
